Handy-Dandy Way

Do you have a mouse problem at your house?

Many have had to deal with such an occurrence.

Question:  If you had to use a tool to get rid of such a pest, which would be the most effective?

If you chose the wooden chest, you are right!

Here’s the handy-dandy way to eliminate mice from your life.

Our latest discovery reveals the truth.  Mice cannot survive the mass of a chest falling on them.  Evidence shows that they get pancaked.

The next time you encounter an invasion of mice, consider the wooden chest technique.  You will be glad you did.

Because He Delights in Me

(Continued from The Fun Game)

The two of us finished our game and got on to the events of the day.

Later on in the morning as I read the eternal scriptures, I pondered this passage from Psalm 18 penned by Israel’s King David.

Holy Bible, Bible, open Bible,He delivered me from my strong enemy,

And from those who hated me,

For they were too mighty for me

They confronted me in the day of my calamity,

But the Lord was my stay.

He brought me forth also into a broad place;

He rescued me, because He delighted in me.”  Verses 17-19

This king, David, got into a bad and dangerous spot.  His testimony is that God delivered him from those who were mightier than he.  God rescued him, why?  He did, because as David said, “He delighted in me.”

As my grandson and I were playing in the early morning, I kept him from succumbing to the effects of gravity and playing with an electrical source that could hurt him.  Rather than reacting in a spirit of anger or judgment, it was compassion for him that moved me to rescue him, because I love him.  I enjoy him and desire to protect the little one in my charge.

This little incident, on the day when I saw the “sunrise in the west”, illustrates the heart of God toward you and me.  To Him, we are special.  He delights in us and works to protect us.  Sometimes we might think He is impeding our progress toward our goals as I did with my grandson.  But some things are not for our good.  He will direct by stopping some of those goals and provide for a better situation.  His perspective is for our good.  Let us thank Him and enjoy being one in whom He delights.

The Fun Game

(Continued from Sunrise in the West)

Scooping him up in my arms, I carried Davey to join me on my bed.

The room somehow began to take on a more interesting look from Davey’s new vantage point.  He was within reach of some interesting “no-no” type items.

desk lamp, green desk lamp, glass lampshade, pull string, brass lamp,

The Tempting Item

The lamp on Grandma’s bedside table with a green glass shade perched on its shiny brass pedestal caught his eye.  Davey ignored its beauty.  What intrigued him was the small beaded chain that dangled beneath the green lamp shade.  When Grandma pulled it the light went on or off.  After studying this little wonder, Davey decided to investigate.

Now that the crib railings could no longer stop him, he was free to crawl across Grandma’s comforter and pillows to give that little chain a tug-just like Grandma did.

I could see the little wheels turning in his inquisitive head.  So I watched to see what he would do next.  Sure enough, he positioned himself on all fours and began his crawl over to the lamp.  As he got too close, Grandma’s hand grasped his ankle and drew him back away from the “no-no.”

“Hey, Grandma, that was kind of fun,” he smiled.  He, then, fixed his eyes on the chain and decided to try it again.

He persistently attempted the trek.  Grandma persisted, too.  I caught his foot to pull him away from a possible problem.  The giggles continued as Grandma and baby played this fun game.

Sunrise in the West

Did you ever see the sun rise in the west?  I did just this morning.

doll, boy doll, doll face,From the west wall of my bedroom, beams of warm sunshine flooded the place.  They entered through the smiling blue eyes and round pink cheeks of my one-year-old grandson.  His little boy lips parted to show off a happy grin filled with eight white baby teeth.

As he peered between the wooden dowels of the oak heirloom crib his Grandpa had made, little Davey unleashed his charm.  With his baby voice, he gurgled out dozens of vowels and syllables.  Apparently his night of rest had left him eager to have a good morning chat with his stuffed puppy dog and his sleepy Grandma.

Rolling myself over, I lifted my eyes to see his exuberant countenance.  Though I felt groggy, his cheerful smile invited me to shake off the last lingering moments of my sleep and to interact with him.  I mirrored his attitude as I welcomed his sweet “good morning.”  Raising my hand, I waved to him.  Davey’s little nose wrinkled up as a sunshiny smile spread across his face.  He raised his chubby hand and jerked back a wave for Grandma.

As a first-time Grandma, I responded with whole-hearted applause.

Not to be outdone, this little cherub signed, “Thank you.”  His gesture resembled that of “throwing kisses.”  Needless to say, he managed to melt my heart.

The Bug Hunt

(Continued from “Hidden Protein”.)

Raspberry Bugs Come to the Water's Surface

For cleaning the raspberries, it is best to cover them with water and let them sit for about 5 minutes.  The resting time in the water gives the berry bugs time to surface for air.  When they do, I get them.  Often they hide in the little dome inside the berry.  I look closely to try to catch any that tried hiding in there.

After cleaning the berries, I add sugar to taste, and package them in freezer containers.  Today I packaged them in freezer bags.

I packaged 6  1-qt. bags of berries.  As they lay on the table before going into the freezer,  my daughter spied some little black creatures in the raspberry sauce.  In spite of all of my searching for bugs, I missed several.

Generally, during the first crop of the year, at the beginning of the harvest, bugs are not much of a problem.  So, it did surprise me to find so many little bugs coming to the surface of the bagged berries.

Ugh, I was not finished with the job!  Fetching the bugs out of all this great sauce I had just made could be a hardship.  Fortunately with teamwork, my daughter helped me.  As l opened the bag’s seal, she scooped them out with a spoon.

Now, I am done.  The bags are in the freezer.  We will enjoy the fruits of our labors many times over through the year.

I think we got all the bugs out.

Hidden Protein

On an innocent trip to the raspberry bed, I ran across hundreds of red berries.  They were my only goal.  I did not realize it, but this harvest would reveal hidden protein.

black bird, red-winged blackbirdI expected it to be a hot day.  So I got out right after breakfast to pick the fruit.

The sounds in the air captured my attention.  Birds sang to me while I picked.  The rooster crowed, while the hens clucked about their lastest accomplishments in the nest.  I enjoyed listening to the outdoor music.

Kitty soon joined me as he rubbed up against my ankles.  Birds scolded, “Scat, scat!” to turn the cat away from their neighborhood.

Occasionally a cool breeze refreshed me.  At other times the hot sun warmed my neck and back as I bent down to gather the berries.   Perspiration began to collect on my forehead.

red raspberriesAt long last, with the pail filled with tangy-sweet raspberries, I went into the kitchen to process them.

Now, berries are a carbohydrate, but protein lurked in my pail.

A Do-List on the Farm

This morning, before getting on with my day, I read my Bible and spent time thanking the Lord for the world He has provided here for me to live (and work) in.  Before I got started with my chores, I asked the Lord for guidance to know which things He wanted me to attend to for the day.

clothesline, clothespins

Luxurious Clothesline

Some of those things included:

  • hanging clothes out to dry  (We have the luxury of a clothesline.)
  • folding laundry
  • dusting my bedroom
  • picking red raspberries (My daughter and I picked 2 gallons today.)
  • fixing steak for lunch
  • planting potato peels (the eyes will grow in spots where my seed potatoes failed to come up)
  • taking a walk for exercise
  • repairing a children’s book my kids used for my grandchildren to use
  • driving tractor to
    green tractor,
A Must-Have Tool on the Farm

take a load of hay over to our sister and brother-in-law’s barn for storage.

My day is not over yet.  But you get the idea.   I live in the country and there is plenty to do.

Was I hilariously joyful in all of those jobs?  Not likely.  But I did ask for the Lord’s guidance and I looked for details about the tasks and that I did enjoy.

Ask for His guidance.  Looking for details can be a treasure hunt that the Lord has in store for you.

What God Has Accomplished

Psalm 57:2 says, “I will cry to God Most High, to God who accomplishes all things for me.”

I have read that verse many times before and considered the “all things” of which it speaks.  I gazed into the future and daydreamed about what God may do for me.  But the future is so hazy that I cannot rejoice in the specifics of what God may do for me.

Today, I looked back at what He has done.

  • He gave me loving parents and hand-picked my family members .
Sunrise, Lake Superior, Chequamegon Bay, Ashland, Wisc., oredock, Sunrise on lake
Ashland, WI on beautiful Lake Superior
  • He let me grow up in the north country  to see His Majesty through Lake Superior.
  • He has provided a getaway cabin in the north woods for us to enjoy.
  • He granted me the desire of my heart.  I wanted to be a wife and a mother.  He provided a prince of a man to be my  husband.
  • He took me through childbirth four different times.  He lifted me up and held me when I miscarried.
  • He gave me hope when I was depressed.
  • He saved me from death when I needed emergency surgery.
  • He protected me and my husband when we had 2 potentially fatal accidents within 5 minutes of each other.
  • He has comforted me with the recent loss of my Dad.
  • He provided food and shelter for us even when money was scarce.
  • Before I was created, He loved me and sent Jesus to this earth to be the source of my eternal salvation.

Take a little time today and look.  Can you see what God has accomplished for you?

Enjoy some time thanking and offering Him the praise He deserves today.

In Defense of Weeds

Useless weeds take away nutrients and water that ought to nourish the crop.  They can choke the plants in the garden and make them fruitless.  They can also be harmful.

I don’t want them in my garden.  So I cultivate around plants and between the rows.

Jewelweed,

Jewelweed in bloom

Are these plants totally useless?

Without them:

  • soil erosion would be more of a  problem
  • wildlife would not find as many hiding places
  • more animals would suffer hunger
  • this world would not be as colorful
  • some are noxious, while others have healing power

Maybe there is use for them after all.  But not when they are out-of -place and out-of-control.

God has made all of creation.  There is much to learn about Him in it.

nettles,

Nettle with its Characteristic Jagged-edged Leaves

I found a noxious weed in my raspberry patch.  Nettles are a pesky weed that stings the bare skin.   It is very irritating to the victim.

In His wisdom, God has provided the antidote for the nettle-burn.  In its natural habitat, the nettle’s neighbor is jewelweedThe juice of this weed applied to the nettle-sting will counteract it.  Yes, there are jewelweeds growing in my raspberry bed.

How wise our Heavenly Father is.  We can learn about Him as we explore His creation and His Word, The Holy Bible .

However, I still plan to uproot the nettle.  It is out-of-place and troublesome there and has to go.

A Weed in My Garden?

The World Book Dictionary defines weed as “a useless or troublesome plant.”

lettuce, weed, glove, hand, pulling weeds, garden I have been weeding my garden over the past couple of days.  Some carrot and beet seedlings are so small that I could barely see them in the row.  As they grew, so did the weeds.  I purposed to remove the weeds and get the garden looking like a healthier place for my plants.  So in the early hours, I got out in the cool of the day to remove those useless, troublesome plants.

While pulling them up, my mind went back to some words of Jesus in John 15:1 (Living Bible).  He said, “I am the true Vine, and my Father is the Gardener.”

Have you ever thought of God being a gardener?

What do you suppose is in His garden?

Later on in the passage in John 15:5, Jesus continues, “Yes, I am the Vine; you are branches.”  People are His crop.

If you were the gardener and your life was the crop, what would you see?  The crop, the weeds or both?

Squash, weed, glove, hand, pulling weeds, gardenJesus says in Matthew 6:33 (KJV), “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness . . .”  Are there things in your garden that cling so closely that you cannot seek the kingdom of God?  Are they choking you and preventing you from seeking His righteousness?

Maybe it is time to evaluate what really is growing there.  Pull up whatever makes it difficult to seek the Lord and His righteousness.  If you do, you will not miss out on anything of value.  Matthew 6:33 goes on to say, “. . . and all these things shall be added unto you.”

The Head Gardener will be pleased with His crop.
