Parent-Friendly

medium_4395453648I had the delight of hosting my daughter and her young son at the farm last week. Having not had his first birthday, makes the little one quite dependent on others.  As Grandma, I got to play with him a time or two.

At meal time, he sat in an heirloom, caned high chair. Finger foods were plentiful for my little offspring. They rested scattered on the food tray of the old high chair. The height of the chair is functional, but as you will see, it makes for trouble . . . sometimes.

During this particular visit, the good thing was that his eye/hand coordination had developed quite well. Picking up a piece of cereal and looking it over before putting it in his mouth worked just fine. Along with the eye/hand abilities, he practiced making verbal sounds like, “D”. I encouraged him to say, “Daddy.” However, that word was still a bit too complex for his young mind and body to perform.

Innocently, I started playing a game to help him use his D-sounds. When he dropped a piece of cereal or a utensil, I said a noticeable, “Oh-oh.” My grandson’s eyes dropped to find what had fallen to the floor. Studiously he exclaimed, “D.”  I chimed in with him to say, “Down.” This scenario happened repeatedly.  As a grandma, I thought it was fun to play with him this way. After all, he was learning a lesson on “Down.”

And now we get to the bad thing. The review went very well. He enjoyed dropping what Grandma picked up for him and I enjoyed the, “Oh-oh!”, and the “D…D” exchanges with my grandson. But now Mommy and Daddy have to put up with this funny little game, too.  They find it tiring.

I guess Grandmas can get away with a few things when the kids do not always live with her. But I will have to remember to control the games I teach him in the future. From now on I will consider whether or not the game is Parent-Friendly.

Memory – A Winter Picnic

indoor picnicHas the long winter gotten to you?  If you have very young children in your home, try the excitement of a winter picnic. We had fun with it when our children were small.

You need to work on the menu, the serving place, and the “setting.”

My home is not terribly big.  I decided to use my biggest room for the serving place.  I chose a blanket we use for sitting on the grass as my “picnic tablecloth.”  I served the food on paper plates as we generally do for picnics.

The menu is yours to decide.  Whatever your family typically enjoys on picnics will add to the aura of your experience.  We had “Fun Buns” and gelatin.  Fun Buns are a yeast bread baked in a 8-9 inch round cake pan.  After baking, slice the bread sideways to make a top and bottom of the bun.  Barbecue, pizza burger or cheese burger fillings go great for the sandwich filling.  Before serving, cut the bun/sandwich in wedges.

stuffed animalsTypically for a picnic, the setting has trees, flowers, rivers or ponds and even some small creatures.   So, for our picnic, I looked for ways to emulate such a view. I placed our indoor plants in conspicuous places where the family would see them on our picnic.  Because some plants did not have blooms, I stuck stems of artificial flowers in with the green plants to spruce up the scenery.  I gathered small mirrors into one place to fashion a ”pool.”  Bath toys served as fish or ducks for the “pond.”  I gathered various armfuls of stuffed animals hid them behind furniture and lamps.  After eating, we went on a safari hunting for the animals. We all had a fun time with our pretend “winter picnic.”

Home does not have to be boring.  Try making a memory with your very own Winter Picnic.  I think you will be glad you did.

A “Home-made Christmas”

632-Nativity-SceneMany of us have traditions of family Christmases long ago that we zero in on each year.  Christmas, based on the generously lavish gift God sent into the world, i. e., the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior, awakens generosity and gift-giving in people all over the world. Our little home is no exception.

One Christmas, it looked like we would be short of cash.  We determined that we would all have a “Home-made Christmas.” We included the kids in this little concept. Each of the kids got a chance to make gifts for one other and for Mom and Dad.

  • Our eldest made me a foot stool of wood with an upholstered cushion.
  • My husband and I fashioned a doll out of wooden spools for our young daughter.
  • My husband made me a small wooden nativity scene to set on our window sill. He designed a second one as a toy for our small daughter.

Not all of the gifts were made of wood.  My husband likes candy. What a perfect gifts we made for him from our kitchen…peanut brittle and toffee.

Though the home-made gifts worked for us when money was scarce, we need not wait for that reason to make Christmas home-made. Let me encourage you to try it. You may have many resources in your home and garage with which to work.  Be creative. You have plenty of time to get working on it. There are still over 2 months till Christmas. Not only will you be making a gift, you will make a memory!

To purchase cards with the “Nativity” design, drawn of the gift my husband made, follow this link to our store.

Memory – An Outdoor Movie

Family movie night, outdoor movie, Family fun, Activities for young family,As the summer activities are still very much a part of our lives, what more fun could a young family have on a comfortable summer evening than watching an outdoor movie? Unfortunately, the outdoor theaters in our area are a memory from the past.  So, how about having an outdoor movie at home?

Family fun night, Movie night, outdoor movie, Activities for young families,We did that one time.  We invited our friends over to join us.  This was too much fun to do it alone.

Old TV set, Outdoor movie, Summer fun, activities for young families, young children,Our television easily fit through our living room window.  We mounted it on a small table out in our yard.  Our lawn has a sloped side.  We brought out blankets to serve as seating on the incline.

We popped popcorn.  As the summer sun went down beyond the horizon as we gathered around to enjoy the feature.

The smallest of the children got to play outdoors when their attention wandered. Some children cuddled pets that were not allowed in the house. Any spilled popcorn did not need to be swept up when when the movie was over.  All in all, I would say it was a worthwhile event.

If you decide to try this, be sure there is no rain in the forecast. Pick a place where mosquitoes are not likely to attend. Happy viewing!

Baby Food

newborn baby, baby, baby blankets,We have a new grandchild.  He is the first born child in his family. I have had the privilege of being on hand to help the family out as he gets established in nursing.

The parents have sought out the resources of family and professionals, to get the baby started off in good health. Counselors assist giving information on how to best feed him naturally.  The teachers tell mothers and fathers the best way to work with their babies.  They faithfully encourage the “doing” of it, not just the “”hearing” of it.  In the Bible, James 1:22 encourages, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving ourselves.” To hear and do is superior to just hearing.

Babies crave the milk. God has given them that instinct. In some ways, God encourages us to be like babies. I Peter 2:1,2 says it this way, “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” (NKJV)  Rather than craving and feeding ourselves with such things as malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and all evil speaking, we are to feed our cravings as babes do.  We are to satisfy ourselves with the pure food of God’s Word.  That “pure milk” will produce healthy growth in our lives just as a baby’s milk does for him.

We want precious babies to grow and mature. God counts each of us a precious.  He wants us to grow.  Use the Word that He has provided for your growth and well-being.  It will bring you to maturity.

The drawing by Wenda Grabau called “Newborn” is available in our store.

Dear Daughter

reflections, colored reflectons, reflections on water, nighttime reflections, reflections of lights on water,When I think of you, my daughter,

I see the reflection of myself.

For better or worse,

My image shines through you.

Your success at learning;

Your talent in music, art, and books;

Your compassion for others;

These are qualities I admire in you.

Your energy to meet a challenge,

Spurs you on.  If you fail,

Your persistent spirit and courage

Make me proud of you.

But another image shines through you.

Our Heavenly Father created you.

He chose to put us together.

Forever you will be my daughter.

He created us both to share the special

Relationship of mother and daughter.

He gave us to each other to enhance

Our lives and the lives of others.

Search for God,

Order your life after His plan,

Yield to Him as His instrument

Reach out this needy world.

Walk daily with Christ.

Feed on His Word.

Spend time in prayer.

Live in obedience to Him.

Then you will not only be a reflection

Of your mother and dad,

But you will be a living reflection of Jesus

Shining through you.

Go for the goal, daughter.

Reflect Him with all of your life.

When you do,

You will honor me.

Through Heaven’s Doors

In 2010, I wrote this little poem when my dear Dad died.

The Lord's Prayer,Today I witnessed your last battle.
Could you sense me standing near?
Did you hear my voice sing “Amazing Grace”
Or recite for you “The Lord’s Prayer”?

Did you hear my tender, “I love you,”
As I held and kissed your hand?
I longed for you to feel me near
When you left for that better land.

Despite your lengthy sojourn here,
It ended way too soon.
bird singing, bird, songbird,Silently your sweet soul slipped away
To rest in your heavenly home.

In your ninety-sixth year,
Jesus took you by the hand,
Destined for total victory
To the place He prepared for you.

At last your deaf ears heard sweetness;
Birds singing with angel choirs.
Your painful feet leaped for joy
When He led you through heaven’s doors.

Memory – “Making Donuts”

cutting donuts, donut dough, yeast donuts, homemade donuts,I have an old cookbook with many recipes to stimulate my creative side.  Although I am not making things no one has ever tried before, in my culture, many of them are no longer commonly done.   It is so easy to stop at a local market or bakery to purchase their wares.

One of these recipes I use is for donuts.  When I consider the cost of flour, sugar and yeast, I could make these delicacies much donut holes frying in deep-fat, frying donuts, cheaper.  Granted it takes time and effort.  It is not something I wish to do often.  So when I do, it is special.  We invite friends to share in the experience.

My recipe is a yeast recipe.  The dough is started and has to rise twice before our guests arrive.  My husband and I work at the deep-fat frying.  Our friends and the children get to sugar and frost the donuts when they have sufficiently cooled.  We top the time of by enjoying the yummy fruits of our labors with a tall glass of fresh farm milk.

If you have an old cookbook, check it out.  You may find a fun recipe like this that you will be able to make into an experience you can share with your children and others.

Memory – Chicken Pox Party

Our kids got chicken pox. It is hard and uncomfortable at times. In between applying calamine lotion to lesions and trying to cheer up the kids, I came upon the idea of making a party. It is hard to celebrate alone, but we made the effort to make their stay at home out of the ordinary and not so humdrum. Food is a necessity, so we used it to create the party.

Chicken pox, Chicken Pox sandwich, Chicken pox party, Party sandwich with a face,I have a recipe for a yeast bread called “Fun Buns.” They are baked in a 9″ cake pan. When cooled, I slice the bun horizontally. That 9″ piece of bread was covered with a salad mixture such as  tuna or chicken. As you can see from the photo, boiled eggs made the eyes and nose. Pimento pieces made the red pox on the sandwich face.  A slice of dill pickle formed the smile. And curly pretzels gave a salty hairstyle to the sculpted sandwich.

Cake, Party cake, chicken pox cake, chicken pox, chicken pox party cake,For dessert, we had cake with candles. I put a slice of crustless, white bread on the top of the cake. It, too, became a face. Red sugar sprinkled on the bread illustrated another chicken  pox face. Raisin eyes and nose along with a red frosting smile gave the face some personality. The candles just made things fun.

This party required that no guests be invited. Thankfully, it is a party that we did not have to have annually. Because it was an out-of-the-ordinary event, it did lighten up a hard circumstance. If  you get in a fix like this, try having a chicken pox party.

Memory – The “Circus”

ideas for families with children, low-cost ideas for families with children, Circus cast, Mother and children, baloons,I got the idea for creating a home-made circus.  The acts came from the children and I helped them fulfill their dreams.  My son was the lion tamer and he also rode an elephant.  One of my daughters played a high wire artist. One did a dancing act and a trapeze act.  I played the part of the ring-master and a juggler. We planned and practiced.

Costuming was made simple by the girls wearing leotards and bathing suits for their performances.  A few embellishments, like caps and flowers, added to the festive experience of our little circus.

Wild animals had to be made.  For instance, my son rode an elephant.  We used a dust mop for the elephant’s body.  We covered the mop end, or the head of the animal, with a paper bag on which we had drawn the animal’s mouth and eyes.  We fixed floppy ears to the side of his head.  The elephant snout consisted of a long piece of brown paper.

ideas for families with children, low-cost ideas for families with children, lion tamer act, playing circus, circus acting, The lion required a cage, of course.  To make it we strung streamers from the ceiling.  A step stool served as the lion’s perch.  The tamer wore a safari hat and worked with a bamboo fishing pole for his whip. My daughter played the part of the lion.

The high wire consisted of a plank lying across 2 chairs.  My daughter navigated it well.  For the trapeze act, our littlest daughter had a baby swing that we had bought.  We wound up the spring and the swing moved her back and forth. She had a swinging performance.

girl, balloons, Also, we played one of our littlest daughter’s favorite children’s song. We played it for her dance.  She held balloons and danced to her song.  It was such a hoot.  I laughed till tears came.  What fun we had!

With all of us in the program, the only one in the audience was the kids’ dad, my husband.  That would not do to have a sparse audience after all of our work and practice so we invited Grandma and Grandpa over for the show.  One time we invited another family with children to join us.  Their children brought acts along with them.  It was quite a show.  Popcorn fit in well with all the good the entertainment.

There you have a few of our ideas.  I hope that this gives you a little nudge in the same direction so that you can enjoy some creative pretending-times with your children. It will bring you some special memories.
