One of These Brothers

ice water, glass of water, water glass, I read Matthew 25:37-40 (NASV) in the Bible this week.   In this portion of scripture, Jesus is teaching a lesson to His disciples.  He says,“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?  And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?  When did we see You sick or in prison, and come to You?’  The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.‘”

I pondered this statement for a time before my day got too busy.   In the past I thought “one of these brothers” meant someone outside my home, maybe a stranger.  As I tried to apply this lesson to my life, I questioned, “I don’t happen on the hungry or thirsty or those needing clothes.  I don’t generally spend time with the sick or those in prison. How can I put this scripture lesson into practice in my life?”

Jesus said in the verses, “The King said, ‘To the extent that you did it to ONE of these brothers of mine.'”

One of these brothers” of His could be a wife’s husband, couldn’t it? The answer came in questions as follows:

  • Does not my husband come in hungry?  In this cold winter, does he not need foods to give him the energy he needs to work outdoors?
  • Often he comes in thirsty, do I have the liquids ready to quench his thirst?
  • Is he a stranger in my home?  Do I make him feel that he is welcome and interesting or am I involved in my interests, ignoring his presence?
  • He needs work clothes daily. Do his jeans and shirts need mending or patches?  Am I focusing on those needs?
  • If he gets sick, I will care for him.  But am I doing all I can to prevent him from becoming ill?
  • I hope he does not feel uncomfortable and likes to be here in his home.  Does he sense that I respect him as the head of our home?
  • Does he know he has my help and support?  Am I following his lead?

I am sure Jesus, does want us to meet the needs of those outside of our homes.  But let us also look for ways to serve the Lord right here at home.

The Storm Rages

evergreens, snowstorm, winterscape, winter storm,A winter storm rages this morning as I write.  Storms are a part of life.  Though we don’t like its fury, our land needs the snow-cover it brings.

Storms of all kinds happen all over our world.  There are those relating to weather, relationships, finances, physical challenges, mechanics, scheduling, etc.    They are real.  They are not fun.

This morning the storm brought to mind a story from the Holy Bible about Jesus.  It is from Matthew 8:24-27, (NKJV)

“And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and woke Him, saying ‘Lord, save us! We are perishing!’ But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?‘ Then He arose a rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, ‘Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?'”

Is it not interesting that Jesus called the disciples’ faith small?  Notice from their statement, they did not really know Jesus.  The extent of His power, His spoken Word, had not occurred to them yet.

Mankind has much knowledge, but may still be in the dark as to the power of Jesus and God’s Word. How well do you know Him? Even disciples have much to learn.  Disciple of Jesus or not, I challenge you to dig into the Holy Bible to search out the truth about this Great One that even the winds and the sea obey. Any storm you experience He can handle.  Let it lead you to Him.

Encouragement from Scripture

Bible, Open Bible, Bible pages, Bible and ribbon, Ribbon page marker,Another verse I have committed to memory is Leviticus 19:11 . It says, “Thou shalt not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.”

Why, you might ask, does this verse encourage me? Since I try to do all it says anyway, what can I learn from this verse?

Let me tell you. I Peter 1:16 says “As it is written, ‘Be ye holy, for I am holy.'”  This quotes God’s very words. He commands us to be like Him. So when He instructs us, in Leviticus 19:11, to not steal, not deal falsely, and not lie to one another, He reveals to us what He is like.

God does not steal.  He does not deal falsely.  He does not lie.  He will not steal from our lives, He gives to them.  He does not deal falsely with us, He is righteous.  He does not lie to us, He honestly tells us the truth. Because of His nature, I can trust Him.

Doesn’t He sound like the sort of friend you long to have? If you don’t know Him as your personal friend and Savior, confess your sin and your need of Him.  Place your trust in Jesus Christ. Give your life to Him today.  Your relationship to Him will start and as you spend time in His Word, He will instruct you and reveal Himself to you.

This Bible verse from Leviticus is filled with good instruction to use in directing our lives, but it also paints a picture of the very God I serve.  Through it I can know him better.

Try memorizing scripture yourself. It can change your life.

A Love Letter

Ribbon, love letters, letters, fountain pen, bundle of love letters, letters,Could it be in these high-tech days of computers, internet and cell phones that many people will never have the joy of communication by love letters?

I remember the joy of receiving letters from my husband when we first got acquainted. We lived in different towns and, at times, different states.  The expense of long distance phone calls prevented us from calling each other.  The letters brought us closer in heart and mind.  In the early days of my relationship with my husband, I learned about him from the words he spoke and the words he wrote.  I could tell what things he considered important and about his desires for the future.  Better yet, I learned about his character.  Outside of being there in person, what better way to get acquainted with someone, than to hear or read his thoughts?

Have you ever considered why God inspired His Word, the Holy Bible?  He wants men and women, boys and girls to know Him. If you have a Bible, are you making time to get acquainted with God by reading and studying it? If you don’t have the Holy Bible, can you see why you need one? God desires a relationship with you.

I have been learning what God is like from His Word. I particularly have grown in my knowledge of His character by memorizing Bible verses. For example, Exodus 33:14 says, “And He said, ‘My Presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.'”  God accompanies mankind.

The psalmist, King David, said in Psalm 139:7-10, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your Presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell  in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.'” The One, true, holy God is everywhere.

Thank Him for His Presence with you and determine to get to know Him more through reading and studying His Word, the Bible.

Conforming

Tractor, John Deere vintage tractor, tracing, window pane, pencil tracing,A few short days ago I got a chance to teach my young grandson how to draw a picture onto tracing paper. From that, he transferred the design to another paper, again by tracing. In this exercise, he was conforming the new drawing to the size and shape of the first picture. Hence, the second drawing looked like the first one.

As I observed his progress, this Bible verse came to mind:

“And be not conformed to this world,

but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind

that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Romans 12:2 KJV

In The World Book Dictionaryconform means “to become the same in form; correspond in form or character.”

What an opportunity to teach a spiritual lesson! I explained that tracing made one new image look like the original. As the Holy Bible says in the verse above,

  • we can choose to obey and not be conformed to the things of this world
  • or, we can choose to ignore this instruction and become conformed to this world.

Self-centered lives, pride, greed, disregard for God, family, and life are but a few qualities that prevail in this world.  We can choose to not be conformed to all of that by allowing God’s Word to renew our minds. The Holy Bible can make us like Jesus, “the Word that was made flesh and dwelt among us, . . . full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 KJV

Let’s all learn from this little object lesson, and choose to look like Christ.

Comparing Apples

White apple blossoms, apple blossoms, apple tree,

The Fruit Beginnings

In botany, I learned that fruits differ. Apples and pears are pommes. Pommes reproduce themselves by blossoms. The ovary of the blossom houses the true fruit of the plant...its seed.

We tend to think that the flesh of the apple is the fruit.  That is not so.  The developing ovary of the blossom gets fleshy and sweet.  As stated above, the true fruit of the plant is its seed.  The seed will reproduce itself.

With that little science lesson behind us, let me tell you of my current project. Our apple trees continue to bear. I have one wire basket and 1/2 of a bushel basket full of apples to process. They have enough food value for us that I will save as much as possible. Yesterday I made a nice batch of applesauce in my crock pot. It takes 5 hours to cook enough to make a nice chunky sauce and the crock pot has not scorched the finished product. I like that. I will finish working with the apples as soon as I can. Working with apple after apple I make some observations of how they parallel with truth.

apples, red apple, yellow apple, blemished apple,

Outsides differ with cores and seeds within.

While I sat at the table busily peeling the apples, I noted that every apple is not the same. Some are bruised, while others are firm. Some are large and others are small. Some are pretty and inviting, while others look tough and unappealing. Yet, regardless of their outward appearance, the apples all have seeds. You will recall that the seed is the real fruit.

That truth brought me around to thinking about how people are like these apples. We all look different. Some of us are not as attractive as others. Some of us are not as young and thriving as others. Yet there is still an inner part of us that remains in each of us forever. We each have an eternal soul that will live on forever. It has such value that the eternal God sent his Son, Jesus, to earth to make provision for our souls to live eternally with Him. By his death on the cross for our sins, if we believe in Jesus, He gives us the right to become his children. (John 1:12)

I am so glad that outward appearance does not determine our value.  It is the condition of our hearts and soul in relation to Jesus that matters. Put your trust in Him. Believe in Him.  Your heart and soul matterGod wants to have you for His child.

Obey…why?

Remember the little children’s song, “Obey your mommy and daddy?” We sung it when my kids were quite small. It has a great message that is good for oldsters as well as the youngsters.

Obedience, a key to a happy life, gets a bad rap from those who lean towards the, “Do your own thing” or ” I did it my way” mindset.

drawing, biking, bike ride, mom riding bike, dad riding bike, kids on bike,I have a true story to relate to you.  In it you will see that obedience is a life-saver.

The warm weather lured me and my husband and our young son outdoors.  For a fun part of our afternoon time, we pulled out the bikes and decided to all go bike riding. Our littlest member of the family was small enough to ride in a little bike trailer.  My husband pulled her along with him.  Our young son and I had our own bikes.

The farm is located on country roads.  In those days traffic was not heavy as it gets these days in the summer.  So we decided to ride to a nearby paved road for a smooth excursion.  We went along nicely.

On the way back home we approached a stop sign.  Our son’s youthful mind did not comprehend the meaning of the sign.  As he came closer to it I yelled, “Stop!”  He kept on rolling along.  Again, with alarm in my voice, I shouted,”Stop!!”  Just then a car came darting over the hill in front of us and whizzed right by.

My son’s obedience saved his life.  He could have been hit by that car.

Our Heavenly Father wants our obedience, too. Just as I gave directions to my son for his safety, He gives us directions for our good, not for our harm. If you want His direction and want to hear His voice, spend time hearing and reading, studying, memorizing and meditating in the Word of God, the Holy Bible.

One of my prayers for my grandchildren is that they would learn the practice of obedience in their homes from their loving parents.

The Gift Giver

The other day. I picked a flower in my garden.  The delicate beauty of its color and shape called out to me.  So I spent some relaxing time sketching it.  It brought joy to my heart as the lines took shape and mimicked the creation that God had put in my back yard.

Pencil sketch, flower, gladiola,The delight I felt welled up within me and prompted me to share it with a friend.  Her response, “You have a gift.”

Have you ever heard those words?  It maybe that you are a gifted:

  • singer
  • artist
  • mechanic
  • care-giver
  • story-teller
  • woodsman
  • needle-worker
  • financier
  • or whatever.   Many professions and hobbies display our gifts.

The World Book Dictionary defines gift as “something given; present.”  Notice that there is a giver.

In the Holy Bible, we read in James 1:17, “Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”  God has given us gifts.

When I see the gladiola or other floral beauty, He is the One I thank, since He made it and gave it.  Even as I pass by the sketch of the gladiola resting on my table, the pleasure I receive bursts forth and causes me to thank the Lord for giving me the ability to reflect the beauty He made.

I hope you can recognize the things He has given you.  He is the Gift Giver.  Enjoy Him and His gifts.  He deserves the credit.

A “Feel-Good Moment”

cucumbers, pickling, brine,Shortly after 7 A.M., I hung out my husband’s laundry.  I spied a lone, young white rooster lingering at the door of the hen house that must have failed to come in the brooder house at dusk.  He spent the night outside.  I walked to the brooder house so I could assess the situation more closely.  I decided to leave the rooster alone.  But now that I was this far from the house I walked over to the garden.  I found my first cucumbers.  They measured 1-4 inches long, so I picked them.  I also picked a small bouquet of dill for making pickles of my first-of-the-season cucumbers.  I snipped some basil. Two nice zucchinis got my attention.  I took them.  My arms were filling up fast.  A fresh, green head of lettuce lured me and I picked that.

zucchini bread, sweet bread, loaf pans, bread, In the kitchen, I scrubbed the cucumbers letting them soak in water for one hour in the refrigerator.  Meanwhile, I found my “Best in the Word Dill Pickle” recipe and started to make the brine.  I washed my jars, assembled my canning equipment and by 8:30 A.M. my daughter joined me.  She shredded my zucchini and, as a duo, we prepared the batter for 2 loaves of zucchini bread.

By this time, my husband came in for breakfast.  The timer buzzed; time to pack the pickles.  I dutifully packed fresh, aromatic dill and the cucumbers in the jar.  I poured hot brine on them and sealed the jar.  We completed the the finishing touches on the bread.  I buttered the loaf pans and my daughter poured in the batter.  By 9 A.M., the loaves were baking in the oven.  Ah, what a “feel-good moment”!  We still had the morning ahead of us and two food service items were already accomplished.

While I am not always an early-bird riser, I so enjoy the satisfaction of getting extra things done before breakfast.  The aroma of cinnamon wafts through the house as the bread bakes and the morning is still young…another “feel-good moment”.

Light in the Dark

pencil sketch, chicken house, grove of trees, grove, trees,

The Brooder House

We have a couple of houses for our chickens.  One houses the laying hens and a rooster.  The brooder house keeps the new chicks warm in the cooler temperatures.  The oldest chicks are one week old.  The newest were hatched last Monday.  They all need special attention to thrive.

Baby chicks must be kept warm.  Since our chicks are not being raised by a mother hen with her warmth and protective cover, we must supply the heat for their survival.  Heat lamps are the answer.

We hang heat lamps above their pen.  It must be monitored.  On hot days we adjust the lighting to use less heat, on colder days we use more.   The lights will be used night and day until the chicks are mature enough to survive without them.

brooder lights, young chicks, brooder house, heat lamps,The interesting thing about the lights is that when they are shining during the day, it is very difficult to notice them.  But during the night, it is clear to us whether or not they are shining.  The same amount of wattage shows in the day and in the night, but the light is more easily seen in the darkness.

Jesus made the statement, “I am the light of the world.”  The Bible says in John 1:4, 5, “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Jesus, the Light of the World, is always shining into our world.  He shines when we think we can see into our future and things look pretty good.  He is also shining when we cannot see for all of the darkness that clouds over our lives and when we don’t see a good outcome to our future.  Just like the lights in the brooder house, He is shining.  Yet He can be spotted more easily in the dark.  Whether your life in easy now or you are hemmed in by darkness, look for Him.

Hint: Look for Him in the Holy Bible.
